Statement

Spatial studies; exciting interior public spaces, described using straight lines allowing the eye to investigate the space. I am interested in the sense of space, architecture, minimalism. I equate spaces with desire and design; ideal living, ideal being; neat, minimal, clinical. Recreating spaces, investigating a meeting point for visual art and visual design. Encouraging a moment of contemplation, absorption and reflection.

Working Practice; my work concerns spaces which I investigate through drawing, photography and painting. After studying and documenting the space my drawing develops in the studio.

I concentrate on the shell of a space pushing and altering it to create architectural spaces of desire. It is important to me that I document and study the space thoroughly on site. The spaces I use contain no obvious architectural features, giving a universal feel; a blank canvas.

Paintings; I find white surfaces very exciting; white can contain colours, shades, and patterns; allowing subtle differences in the finish. My work uses the shadows of the void to draw in the space. These shadows are sharp and clean, supporting my need for a clean straight line. I find the solid nature of the wood helps to create an architectural line and plane that canvas would not give. Delivering a sense of structure. I enjoy the use of flat white planes and calm interior spaces; I find calm and contemplation in a white surface; a sense of being alone, in an uninhabited, almost clinical building. I like to inhabit spaces that are minimal, neat, linear and balanced. Belongings, clutter, can create disorderly lines in spaces which disrupt peace and space to think. I am very interested in how spaces work with the eye and mind.
